The dirt patch near San Antonio Avenue and the Union Pacific railroad track called Latimer Field was the firs area in the region to welcome the aircraft Curtiss JN4 "Jenny".
On the 30s, to accommodate the war effort the airport was changed to a modern airfield with concrete runways, an air traffic control tower and an instrument landing system.
In 1942, two concrete runways were constructed at ONT with funds from the Works Progress Administration.
The airport was named for the orange-packing company next to the airstrip: Latimer Field
After the move from Latimer Field to the southwest corner of the current airport, the landing field became known as Ontario Airport for the first time.
By the end of 2006 Ontario International Airport was renamed to LA/Ontario International Airport to reduce confusion with Ontario, Canada.
